Background:
Despite abundant land and resources, Africa imports $35 billion worth of food annually. At the same time, 140 million Africans face food insecurity.
Africa has the potential to achieve food security in maize, rice and wheat solely by improving productivity on existing harvest land and ensure nutritious diets through increasing the productivity of other crops. By expanding access to finance, improving productivity, and enhancing competitiveness, AAAP seeks to unlock the potential of up to five million hectares of land and foster local food production.
As part of this initiative, IFC is developing a comprehensive solution that combines advisory, upstream and investment solutions for Ag-Techs and financial institutions to support smallholder farmers. This integrated approach will help scale innovative technologies, strengthen agricultural value chains, and broaden financial access for agribusinesses of all sizes.
Objective of the Workshop:
To present the Africa Agriculture Accelerator Program (AAAP) and showcase early pilots that highlight both the challenges and the opportunities in financing smallholder farmers in Africa, including North Africa. The session will also engage participants in exploring how financial institutions—especially MFIs—can participate in strengthening agricultural value chains, supporting agribusiness MSMEs, and contributing to food security.
Target Audience:
- Microfinance Institutions C-Suite.
